UK Winter weather forecast latest
SEVERE WEATHER RISKS OVER THE PERIOD- A general risk of wintry weather exists this week for the UK with perhaps the upland NW of England and Wales at most risk initially of seeing any appreciable snow and more widely Wales and the south, away from the SW, by the week’s end
As we move into the weekend it’s uncertain but on Saturday 4th it looks like we could see high pressure still rather dominant across Scandinavia with a ridge SE but a weak low pressure area disrupt across the SW and sink SE towards the N France. Still quite widespread frost in places night and day in the north and east but more in the way of an E’ly breeze will keep temperatures somewhat above freezing near coasts with wintry showers at times here and across most of England and Wales probably staying rather cloudy with some snow at times, possibly giving moderate falls in places, perhaps most likely in central & southern areas. A rather bitter and raw day with temperatures maxing at about -1 to 1C for many, though perhaps up to 6C in the SW and over high ground more like -2C esp the Highlands.
Sunday 5th in uncertain but may well see the fresh-strong SEly flow persist in many parts with a lot of low cloud and some sleet or snow at times. Any early low cloud & mist or drizzle further east tending to break up a bit and then generally a few bright spells though wintry showers are possible to. Despite the winds an early & late frost inland for many away from the far west and SW with icy patches about , the Highlands may see as low as -8C in the glens. Temperatures by day a very cold -2 to 1C accentuated by the wind chill though more like 3-5C in the SW and around -4C across the exposed uplands.
FEATURES TO MONITOR THIS WEEK
*Quite windy in the exposed parts of the far west and NW midweek & onwards with gusts to 60mph on exposed headlands
*Frosts likely inland through the week for most parts, locally severe in places in central northern England & Scottish eastern & Highland areas
*Moderate to high risk of snow at times through the week esp in the west over upland parts in Wales and the NW hills as well as the Highlands & Northern Scotland and near east coasts as well and then over the parts of the south and western Uk and may central areas too as well by the weekend.
*Plenty of icy patches inland at night where pptn has fallen by day at times during the week and into the weekend
